Don't Go Silent
DON’T GO SILENT
Some years ago, at a family dinner, I had felt misunderstood, like my input was discounted.
So I just quit talking. I stopped making any comments about anything. Later, DawnChere said “Mom, you can’t just shut down like that!” Thank God for strong daughters! I’m thankful for her loving & wise honesty and concern.
I have had to learn not to “Go silent”, but rather, stay engaged! It’s a temptation at times for all of us.
STAY IN THE CONVERSATION!
Whether at work, school or home… with your boss, husband or children… we can make the healthy choice TO STAY ENGAGED, even when we need to make adjustments.
I’m not talking about refusing to grow in our communication skills, or learning to say things more kindly and wisely. I’m definitely not saying we should say whatever we are thinking, no matter what the hurt or confusion it causes! I AM JUST SAYING IT IS CRUCIAL TO BE APART OF THE DIALOGUE!
Be kind and patient and listen well…. and even explain your feelings, if necessary. BUT, DON’T GO SILENT. Stay connected! Contribute something of value!
In other words, your voice is important and needed!
“Disconnecting” simply multiplies your problems! Hurt feelings grow stronger, misunderstandings get deeper and pouting destroys peace & joy!
Our hearts can grow cold when we stop reaching out and caring what is going on around us.
We miss opportunities to understand and encourage those around us & grow closer.
This is particularly true in our families! WE CAN LOVINGLY CREATE A FAMILY CULTURE WHERE EVERYONE HAS A VOICE & EVERYONE’S FEELINGS MATTER.
But, this will never happen if we as adults “withdraw”, refuse to talk and work thru misunderstandings. Sometimes, we just have to “let some things go”, move on and believe down the line, it will be easier to “connect” in some of the more difficult areas with one another!
“Going Silent” usually means GIVING UP… at least temporarily!
I don’t ever want to give up on my loved ones! I want to choose to remain in the conversation and patiently believe for our “breakthru”, however long it takes!
Sometimes we just have to agree to disagree and get over it! Sometimes we have to lovingly but firmly make our feelings known. It takes love, patience, courage & strength to be a family… SO STAY CONNECTED & REFUSE TO “GO SILENT”
(Help me, Lord!).
Remember, It always changes the atmosphere when someone breaks the cycle and says, “I really do care about your feelings. Please help me understand what you’re thinking!”
Hey! We can do this!❤️
Never Give Up!
